This is a complex process of therapeutic procedures, known also as assisted reproductive techniques (АRТ), covering many stages and the final result is ovum fertilization and development of embryo at laboratory conditions. Thus obtained embryos are placed in the uterine for potential implanting.

Initially designed as a method of treatment in obstructed or damaged uterine tubes, in vitro fertilization method nowadays has extended too much its indications. Nowadays it is a method of choice for treatment of many conditions, leading to sterility in women as well as in men. The global trend is that its role is continuing to increase.
