What does IN VITRO fertilization mean?

Fertilization In Vitro (in Latin: in vitro = in glass), often called "in test-tube", is fusion of a spermatozoon and ovum outside the female organism. From this originates the popular name “Baby in a test-tube”

This method of conception has been done for the first time by Dr. Robert Edwards and Dr. Patrick Steptoe in England on 25 July 1978.

Since then, more than one million children are conceived in this way.
